How to Make Perfect Image Cut Outs in Photoshop?

Editing an image is a simple task, but making perfect Image Cut Outs in Photoshop often turns out to be an extremely tricky and challenging job. Read to learn more.

Sometimes, while clicking a photo, you are compelled to shoot a subject in front of an uninteresting or unrelated background setting. You have two options of successfully taking this shot – either you shoot with a wide aperture setting and focus on your subject while blurring the background, or  you can go in for image cut outs in Photoshop, and drop the subject into a more interesting setting.

Before
After

This process of making image cut outs in Photoshop has to be perfected so that the viewer does not notice any change in the image, and gets an impression that the background is natural. For implementing this you will need various tools of Photoshop to select copy and paste a person or subject into a more attractive location.
However, creating a near natural image can be a challenge, especially if the subject is standing against a detailed background, because you’ll find that bits of unwanted background will cling to the subject’s outline – especially in areas of intricate detail such as hair. In the process of removing the background you can lose some of this edge detail, making the picture look a bit unnatural.

Suppose we have to change the background of a picture wherein the photo of a person is clicked in city settings, and we have to show the person standing in a natural habitat, say with sky and palm trees in the background.

First of all we have to take a quick selection tool from the tools box of Photoshop. As we snap the outline of the person with a selection marquee, some bits of background might be selected in finer areas like hair. These areas can be taken care of by launching the refine edge tool, and then brushing around the edges of the hair to add missing strands to the selection. Thereafter a duplicate layer with a mask based on the refined selection will have to be created; the missing hair painted by the brush tool.

Now the new background is added, and the image cut out in Photoshop pasted on the new background picture. Many technicalities have to be kept in mind for setting the radius, brightness, threshold and the noise amount. It can be a real challenge to restore a subject’s hidden hair when painting on a mask, but can be taken care of with a small white brush and carefully brushing it over any hair strands you want to restore, thus making them more visible.

Thus by following small details of the process and taking some precautions, you can actually make perfect image cut outs in Photoshop, enhancing the appeal and impact of your images.
